The TDI Technical Divemaster course is the first professional level in the TDI leadership pathway. It develops the knowledge, demonstration-quality personal skills, dive-management ability, professional judgment, and operational discipline required to lead certified technical divers and assist active TDI Instructors within the graduate’s existing technical qualifications. Training covers technical dive planning, site and team management, complete briefs and debriefs, land or boat support, equipment inspection, technical-diver supervision, emergency readiness, physics, physiology, professional conduct, and controlled leadership in real open-water technical-diving activities.

Standards verification note: Standards verification note: This section has been checked against the current TDI Standards and Procedures, Part 3, Section 3 — Technical Divemaster, and the official TDI course page. Graduates may assist an active TDI Instructor during approved courses and supervise certified technical divers only where the activities are similar to their prior training and within the technical level for which they qualify. The program does not cover overhead environments except advanced wreck. The maximum open-water ratio is 4 candidates per instructor. The minimum course is four open-water dives with at least 100 minutes of accumulated bottom time and ten classroom and briefing hours. Minimum prerequisites are age 18, current SDI Divemaster certification and materials, current CPR/first aid and oxygen-administration credentials where applicable, a current physician-signed medical, proof of 50 logged dives, and technical-diver certification. Graduation additionally requires two complete briefs and debriefs, at least two dives at the highest Divemaster level applied for, demonstration-quality skills, mature judgment, successful examinations, completed logs, and submission to TDI Headquarters.

• Professional scope

Assist active TDI Instructors and supervise certified technical divers in open water where activities are similar to the graduate’s prior training and within the technical level awarded.

• Required training

Four open-water dives with at least 100 minutes accumulated bottom time, plus a minimum of ten classroom and briefing hours.

• Leadership focus

Technical dive planning, briefs and debriefs, site and team management, equipment inspection, land or boat support, professional conduct, risk control, and emergency readiness.

• Maximum ratio

4 candidates per instructor in open water, with further reduction at the instructor’s discretion.

• Technical level

At least two training dives must be conducted at the highest Technical Divemaster level being applied for; no activity may exceed the candidate’s current certification or experience.

• Environment limit

The qualification does not cover overhead environments, except advanced wreck where appropriate to the graduate’s training and rating.

Best suited to experienced divers progressing toward technical leadership and assistant roles.

Standard small-group training

Standard training is scheduled once the two-candidate minimum is reached. Final group size, schedule, sites, and technical level remain subject to standards, logistics, conditions, and instructor discretion. Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18.

• Current SDI Divemaster certification. Equivalent agency ratings are not accepted for this prerequisite; candidates must cross over to SDI before commencing.

• All current SDI Divemaster materials.

• Current First Response Adult and Child Emergency Care Provider or equivalent, plus Oxygen Administration Provider or equivalent where permitted by law.

• Current medical examination signed by a licensed physician.

• Proof of at least 50 logged dives.

• Technical-diver certification appropriate to the TDI Divemaster level being applied for.

Course Format

Required materials

Current TDI course-specific materials and all current SDI Divemaster materials.

Knowledge development

Minimum ten classroom and briefing hours covering recreational dive leadership, technical-diving physics and physiology, equipment, personal skills, professional skills, standards, planning, supervision, and emergency management.

Leadership practice

Preparation, planning, control, site setup, technical-diver management, shore or boat support, complete briefs and debriefs, dive execution, post-dive review, and professional administration.

Open-water training

Four dives with at least 100 minutes accumulated bottom time. At least two dives are completed at the highest Divemaster level being applied for.

Skill standard

Skills from previous courses are demonstrated at Divemaster quality in leadership-level equipment, including assembly, inspection, entries, exits, weighting, buoyancy, regulator recovery, ascents, descents, buddy procedures, equipment removal and replacement, out-of-gas alternatives, and equipment care.

Assessment

Written or online Divemaster examination with at least 80 percent and 100 percent remediation, the examination for each specific technical level applied for, leadership evaluation, completed dive logs, judgment review, and Headquarters application.

Plan and control technical-diving activities within your personal qualifications, experience, site conditions, and TDI professional scope.

Deliver complete, relevant technical-diving briefs and debriefs and communicate plans, roles, gases, limits, contingencies, and emergency actions clearly.

Manage divers, equipment, surface support, entries, exits, team readiness, documentation, site logistics, and changing conditions professionally.

Demonstrate core diving and technical-level skills precisely enough to provide a clear leadership example.

Recognise developing problems, maintain situational awareness, exercise sound judgment, and support controlled responses without exceeding your role.

Assist active TDI Instructors during approved courses and lead certified technical divers only at the level and in conditions for which you are qualified.

Personal leadership-level and technical-diving equipment appropriate to the rating sought, including exposure protection, regulators, buoyancy system, cylinders, computers or depth and timing devices, cutting devices, DSMB or lift bag, reels, slate or wet notes, compass, and accessories unless specifically confirmed.
Technical training or certification required to qualify for a particular Divemaster level.
First aid, CPR, oxygen-provider training, crossover to SDI Divemaster, physician examination, or professional liability insurance unless separately arranged.
Nitrox, oxygen, trimix, helium, decompression gases, gas-analysis charges, non-standard fills, additional cylinders, equipment hire, boat fees, site fees, or permits unless confirmed.
TDI Headquarters application, professional membership, materials, certification, or processing fees unless specifically included in the booking confirmation.
