TDI Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Proceedures Diver

Course code: TDI-05

Build advanced oxygen-management skills and prepare for technical decompression training.
The TDI Advanced Nitrox Diver course examines the use of EAN-21 through 100 percent oxygen for optimal gas mixes on dives to a maximum depth of 40 metres / 130 feet that do not require staged decompression. Training develops the knowledge, planning discipline, equipment awareness, gas-analysis procedures, and practical skills required to use richer nitrox mixtures safely within the course limits.

Standards verification note: Standards verification note: This combined program must satisfy every applicable requirement of both the TDI Advanced Nitrox Diver and TDI Decompression Procedures Diver standards. The minimum combined course is six open-water dives, including the deeper and staged-decompression experience required by the Decompression Procedures standard; at least two dives must be deeper than 30 metres / 100 feet. Training must not exceed 45 metres / 150 feet, the maximum open-water ratio is 4 students per instructor, and certification is issued only after the student completes both academic programs, required examinations and remediation, dive planning, equipment requirements, skill-performance requirements, and instructor evaluation.

Quick Course Overview

Progress from advanced gas management to planned staged decompression in one integrated technical-diving program.

The combined TDI Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures course satisfies the requirements for both certifications. It covers the use of EAN-21 through 100 percent oxygen, oxygen-exposure management, gas analysis and labelling, decompression theory, dive and gas planning, technical equipment configuration, staged-decompression procedures, buoyancy, trim, team communication, gas switching, ascent control, marker deployment, and contingency management. The combined course requires a minimum of six open-water dives and may be conducted to a maximum depth of 45 metres / 150 feet. Training gases, depths, and procedures remain subject to the instructor’s qualifications, the student’s progress, and all applicable TDI standards.

Best suited to: nitrox-certified divers aged 18 or over who hold an SDI Advanced Adventure Diver, SDI Advanced Diver, or equivalent certification; SDI Deep and Nitrox certification or equivalent and can provide proof of at least 25 logged open-water dives; and already demonstrate reliable buoyancy, trim, gas-management, team-awareness, and problem-solving skills. This combined program is intended for divers ready to progress beyond no-decompression limits and is a strong pathway toward extended range, advanced wreck, cave, and other technical-diving training.

Course Format

Learning Materials

TDI Advanced Nitrox Diver and TDI Decompression Procedures Diver manuals and Knowledge Quests, or the corresponding eLearning, completed before or alongside instructor-led and practical training.

Knowledge Development

Integrated instruction covering advanced nitrox physics and physiology, oxygen and nitrogen limitations, oxygen exposure, equivalent air depth, maximum operating depth, decompression theory and methods, tables and computers, gas selection, gas-volume and reserve planning, equipment, oxygen service and compatibility, gas analysis and labelling, ascent schedules, and emergency and contingency planning. Both required examinations and remediation must be completed.

Land-Based Practice

Equipment assembly and configuration, gas analysis and cylinder labelling, decompression-plan verification, gas and reserve calculations, START and bubble checks, team-role assignment, gas-switch and shutdown rehearsals, marker preparation, and responses to lost gas, equipment failure, and omitted or altered decompression.

Open-Water Training

Stable buoyancy and horizontal trim, propulsion, team awareness and communication, gas switches, controlled ascents and decompression stops, air sharing, regulator and shutdown procedures appropriate to the configuration, surface-marker buoy or lift-bag deployment, and controlled responses to foreseeable gas, equipment, navigation, and team problems.

Dive Requirements

Minimum six open-water dives for the combined Advanced Nitrox and

Decompression Procedures program. Training may extend to 45 metres / 150 feet, and the dive sequence must include the deeper and staged-decompression experience required by the current Decompression Procedures standard.

Duration

The schedule must provide sufficient classroom, briefing, land-based, and open-water time to complete every requirement of both standards safely and efficiently. Actual duration depends on conditions, logistics, group size, and demonstrated performance

What You Will Learn

Select, analyse, verify, and label advanced nitrox and decompression gases; calculate oxygen exposure and maximum operating depth.

Plan staged-decompression dives using suitable depth, time, gas, reserve, ascent, stop, and contingency calculations.

Configure and manage technical equipment, decompression cylinders, regulators, redundant depth and timing devices, and ascent-marker systems.

Maintain buoyancy, trim, propulsion, team position, communication, and controlled ascent through required decompression stops.

Perform controlled gas switches, air-sharing, shutdown, marker-deployment, and decompression-schedule procedures.

Respond to oxygen-toxicity risk, catastrophic gas loss, regulator or equipment failure, omitted or altered decompression, navigation error, and team separation.
