Prerequisites

Minimum Age

Minimum age 18.

Advanced Certification

SDI Advanced Adventure Diver or equivalent, with verifiable experience in deep, navigation, night, and limited visibility diving.

Rescue Certification

SDI Rescue Diver or equivalent.

First Response Training

Current First Response Adult and Child Emergency Care Provider and Oxygen Administration Provider, where local law permits, or equivalent.

Logged Dives

Proof of at least 40 logged dives before starting the course.

Medical Clearance

Physician-signed medical statement required for leadership training.

SDI Divemaster

Course Format

Learning Materials

SDI Divemaster Manual or eLearning and SDI Divemaster Slates used during and after training.

Program Duration

Minimum 40-hour program, with at least 30 hours under direct SDI Instructor supervision.

Practical Requirements

Candidate gives at least 5 briefs/debriefs, demonstrates preparation, planning, and control in dive management, and guides at least 4 dives across varying sites and conditions.

Dive Requirements

Minimum 10 open-water dives during Divemaster training, each at least 20 minutes.

Skills Covered

Training includes confined-water and open-water leadership skills, problem solving, SMB use, emergency action planning, and site mapping.

Final Evaluation

Skills & Judgement

Candidates must complete all confined-water and open-water requirements safely and efficiently, demonstrate Open Water skills while neutrally buoyant, and show mature judgement in dive planning and execution.

Graduation Requirements

Graduation requires 60 logged dives, or 50 logged dives plus 25 hours accumulated underwater time, with at least 30 dives covering a wide range of environmental factors.

Written Exam

Candidates must pass the SDI Divemaster written exam or online version with a minimum score of 80 percent and 100 percent remediation.

Certification Process

Final certification is issued only after successful performance evaluation, completed logbook requirements, required leadership documentation, and SDI processing.
