Prerequisites

Minimum Age

Minimum age 18, or 10 with parental consent.

First Response Training

Current First Response Adult and Child Emergency Care Provider and Oxygen Administration Provider certification, where local law permits, or equivalent.

Advanced Certification

SDI Advanced Adventure Diver, SDI Junior Advanced Adventure Diver, or equivalent.

Alternative Pathway

Alternatively, Open Water Diver certification plus 15 logged open-water dives.

Combined Training Note

First Response training may be combined with the SDI Rescue Diver course by qualified instructors.

Junior Diver Supervision

Divers under 15 may earn Junior Rescue Diver certification and must train and dive under direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or active dive professional.

Rescue Diver

Course Format

Learning Materials

SDI Rescue Diver Manual or SDI Rescue Diver online training, SDI Rescue Diver Knowledge Quest / K.Q. Review, and instructor-led review.

Course Duration

Suggested course duration is 12 hours, with 8 suggested hours performed in open-water conditions.

Practical Training

Practical rescue training includes confined-water and/or open-water rescue skill development, in-water problem solving, accident prevention, and scenario-based rescue evaluation.

Student Ratios

Student-to-instructor ratios: academic unlimited where adequate facilities, supplies, and time are available; confined water 10 students per instructor; open water 8 students per instructor.

Assistant Allowance

An active Assistant Instructor or Divemaster may allow 2 additional students. Additional assistants may be used, but they do not allow further student increases.

Certification Requirements

Final certification requires safe and efficient completion of the required open-water requirements and successful completion of the SDI Rescue Diver Knowledge Quest or eLearning.

What You Will Learn

Accident Prevention

How to recognise and help prevent common causes of diving accidents, including stress, panic, physical conditioning issues, equipment problems, and surface-drowning risk.

Rescue Procedures

How to apply self-rescue, diver assists, surface and underwater rescue procedures, rescue transports, and in-water rescue breathing.

Diver Assistance

How to identify and assist a properly equipped skin or scuba diver simulating breathing difficulties, tiredness, leg cramp, and early panic symptoms.

Underwater Recovery

How to locate and bring a simulated unconscious scuba diver to the surface from approximately 6 metres / 20 feet.

Surface Transport

How to transport a simulated unconscious diver 50 metres / 150 feet while simulating in-water rescue breathing and remove the diver from the water with one aide.

Emergency Response

How to review oxygen administration, manage hyperbaric-injury response, gather information, access emergency transport or assistance, and complete accident reporting.

  • Professional instruction covering accident prevention, emergency planning, rescue procedures, and rescue decision-making.
  • Practical rescue scenarios, in-water skill development, briefings, debriefings, and rescue-performance assessment.
  • Use of required training equipment as confirmed at booking, including tanks, air fills, weights, and specialist equipment where appropriate. Hire equipment and specialised sales support are available.
  • Certification processing after successful completion.

What's Not Included

  • First Response / CPR / first aid / oxygen-provider training unless separately included or combined with the Rescue Diver course by a qualified instructor.
  • Personal equipment such as fins, mask, snorkel, boots, and exposure protection. Hire equipment and specialised sales support are available.
  • Personal cutting device if students are required to supply their own.
  • Travel, accommodation, and meals.
  • Hard copy student manual. Manuals are available to purchase.
  • Anything not specifically listed at the time of booking.
