Training covers equipment assembly and checks, buoyancy and trim, mask and regulator skills, buddy procedures, air sharing, ascents and descents, personal dive-computer use, navigation foundations, emergency procedures, environmental awareness, and dive planning. The objective is not simply to complete minimum skills, but to graduate as a calmer, more capable diver ready to dive with another certified diver in conditions similar to training.

Standards verification note: Standards verification note: This section has been checked against the current SDI Standards and Procedures, Part 2, Section 7 — Open Water Scuba Diver, and the official SDI course page. Graduates may conduct no-decompression dives with another certified diver at the same or higher level, in conditions similar to training, to a maximum of 18 metres / 60 feet. Maximum ratios are 8 students per instructor in confined water and 6 in open water; permitted active assistants may increase those totals to absolute maxima of 12 and 10 respectively. If any student is under 15, the maximum open-water ratio is 4 divers per instructor with no more than two under 15. Entry requires age 18, or 10 through 17 with written parental consent; ages 10 through 14 earn Junior Open Water certification and must train and dive under direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or active dive professional. Certification requires academic completion, required watermanship, all confined-water skills, four daylight or simulated-daylight open-water dives of at least 15 minutes each and at least 80 minutes total, depths between 5 and 18 metres / 15 and 60 feet, no more than three scuba dives per day, an 80 percent final assessment result with 100 percent remediation, completed logs, and mature judgment.

Learning materials
SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Manual and Knowledge Quest or eLearning, completed before or alongside instructor-led training.
Knowledge development
Aquatic environment, physics and physiology, decompression awareness, personal dive computers, equipment, buddy systems, communication, buoyancy, entries and exits, planning, emergency procedures, marine-life awareness, and continuing education.
Watermanship
Complete the required continuous swim or approved swim alternative, followed by the required survival-float or tread-water assessment, without swim aids unless the applicable standard permits an exposure suit.

Personal dive computer
Each student plans, monitors, and logs their own profile using an assigned personal dive computer and learns to interpret depth, time, no-decompression, ascent-rate, and safety-stop information.
Assessment
Complete the final examination with at least 80 percent and 100 percent remediation, plus all watermanship, confined-water, open-water, logging, and judgment requirements.
