Deep Diver Course + Free Nitrox Course

Course code: SDI-06

Build the planning, awareness, and control required for deeper recreational diving.
The SDI Deep Diver course prepares certified divers to plan and conduct no-decompression dives beyond the depth range experienced during entry-level training—deeper than 18 metres / 60 feet and to a maximum of 40 metres / 130 feet. Training develops disciplined dive planning, gas and no-decompression-limit awareness, equipment checks, narcosis awareness, emergency procedures, ascent control, and mature decision-making. All dives remain within the diver’s current certification limits and the conditions in which training is conducted.

Standards verification note: Standards verification note: This section has been checked against the current SDI Standards and Procedures, Part 3, Section 11 — Deep Diver, and the official SDI Deep Diver course page. The SDI minimum is two open-water dives with complete instructor briefings and debriefings. The first dive is limited to 30 metres / 100 feet and the second may be planned to a maximum of 40 metres / 130 feet. The maximum open-water ratio is 4 students per instructor before permitted active assistants are added; divers aged 10 through 14 must not exceed 21 metres / 70 feet. The course may be combined only with the SDI Computer Diver specialty. Certification requires completion of the Knowledge Quest with at least 80 percent, 100 percent remediation, all open-water requirements, and mature judgment in dive planning and execution.

Quick Course Overview

• Certification scope

Plan and conduct deeper recreational no-decompression dives beyond 18 metres / 60 feet, within current certification limits.

• Depth limits

First training dive to a maximum of 30 metres / 100 feet; second training dive to a maximum of 40 metres / 130 feet.

• Required training

Two open-water dives with complete instructor briefings and debriefings, supported by academic development and logged dive planning.

• Core focus

Deep-dive planning, no-decompression limits, gas consumption, equipment, narcosis, physiology, emergency procedures, ascent control, and judgment.

• Maximum ratio

4 students per instructor in open water before permitted active assistants are added; the instructor must reduce ratios when conditions require.

Course Format

Learning materials

SDI Deeper Diving with Dive Computers Student Manual and Knowledge Quest, or the corresponding eLearning course.

Knowledge development

Equipment for deeper diving, dive tables and computers, physics and physiology, narcosis, gas consumption, no-decompression planning, emergency procedures, first aid awareness, and conservative decision-making.

Centre skills-development dive

One shore dive may be used for skills review, equipment checks, planning practice, buoyancy, trim, gas awareness, and readiness assessment. This is an additional centre delivery feature and does not replace either required SDI open-water dive.

Open-water training

Two required dives with complete briefs and debriefs. Plans include surface interval, maximum no-decompression time, depth, time, gas-consumption awareness, emergency procedures, ascent, safety stop, and logging.

Dive sequence

The first required deep dive is limited to 30 metres / 100 feet. The second may be planned to a maximum of 40 metres / 130 feet, subject to certification, conditions, student performance, and instructor judgment.

What You Will Learn

Plan deeper no-decompression dives using a personal dive computer and appropriate planning procedures.

Calculate and monitor depth, time, gas consumption, surface interval, no-decompression limits, ascent rate, and safety-stop requirements.

Understand how increased depth affects gas use, narcosis, task loading, decompression stress, buoyancy, thermal exposure, and equipment choices.

Complete pre-dive equipment checks, descend within the plan, maintain awareness at depth, and ascend with control.

Respond to a simulated underwater emergency assigned by the instructor and apply conservative judgment when conditions or performance do not support the planned depth.
